Tso Kar, a renowned lake in Leh, is situated approximately 50 kilometers away from Tso Moriri Lake. It is located in the Rupshu Valley at an altitude exceeding 14,700 feet and covers an expanse of 10 square kilometers. Situated in the southern region of Ladakh, the lake is renowned for its vast expanse and profound depth. This salt lake is aptly named the White Lake due to the copious deposits of salts and borax found along its banks. Tso Kar is accessible either as a midway point to Tso Moriri or as a layover along the Manali - Leh route. The lake is a popular destination for birdwatchers and nature lovers. Apart from being a habitat for several species like bar-headed geese, great crested grebe, Brahmin ducks, etc., the main attraction is the black-necked cranes or Tibetan Cranes. This destination is also a must-visit for wildlife lovers interested in spotting animals such as Kiangs (wild asses), Tibetan foxes, wolves, horses, and yaks. The lake, encircled by mountains, presents a picturesque view. Local nomads residing in the vicinity earn their livelihood by harvesting salt from the lake's shores and distributing it to neighboring areas.
