Doodhpathri in Kashmir – The Valley of Milk

Doodhpathri is located in the Budgam district of the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir, at an elevation of 2730 meters above sea level. The addition of this location to the state's tourist circuit is attributed to its enchanting meadows, which are a riot of colors in summer and transform into a winter wonderland when covered in snow. The valley is complemented by the majestic snow-capped mountains and verdant forests of pine, fir, and deodar trees, creating postcard-perfect scenery that is sure to captivate photographers.

The name Doodhpathri, signifying “valley of milk”, holds a fascinating story behind it. According to the story, the valley was graced by the presence of the famous Sufi saint and poet Sheikh Noor din Noorani (Sheikh ul Alam). It is said that when he prodded the ground with his stick in search of water, milk flowed out instead. Upon the saint's request, the milk turned into water. This miraculous event led to the valley being named Doodhpathri or the “valley of milk”.

How to reach: Doodhpathri is located 42 kilometers from Srinagar, the capital of Jammu and Kashmir. The road trip from Srinagar to the desired destination typically lasts for about 2 hours.  There are several options for reaching Doodhpathri from Srinagar. The most recommended route is as follows:

 Srinagar – Badgam – Khan Sahib – Doodhpathri

Best time to visit: The most favorable period to plan a visit to Doodhpathri is during the months of April to June and September to October, as the weather during these times is delightful. For those interested in witnessing the snow-covered beauty of Doodhpathri, the ideal time to visit would be from February to mid-March.
